Surface Finish Options

Ex-Mould Fair Face

This is simply the surface as it comes out of the mould, with no finishing applied. A flat, smooth and slightly dull appearance with a colour that comes from the cement, aggregate fines and pigment if used.

For steps and any other walked on surface, this type of finish requires grip strips for outdoor use, and also for interior where wet feet can come in contact.

Sanded Finish

A light sanding with a high grade abrasive maintaining the Ex-Mould Fair Face in appearance with the addition of a silk finish to the surface as the light catches it or to the touch.

For steps and any other walked on surface, this type of finish requires grip strips for outdoor use, and also for interior where wet feet can come in contact.

Salt & Pepper

A ground or heavily sanded surface treatment that cuts partially through the fair face surface to start exposing the aggregates. The speckled appearance of the colours lighter and darker than the cement give the salt and pepper look.

This surface treatment will give more grip than a simple sanding, though will require grip strips for outdoor use, and also for interior where wet feet can come in contact.

Honed

A honed surface is ground to fully expose the aggregate with a smooth, flat matte appearance. As it does not reflect the light like polished blemishes and stains over time are less apparent.

The surface texture can range from very course to silky smooth, with this the amount of light reflected.

For steps and any other walked on surface, this type of finish requires grip strips for outdoor use, and also for interior where wet feet can come in contact.

Polished

Polishing is the process of refining the surface to produce a low to high level of refelctivity. The shine enriches the colours of the aggregates bringing an alluring vibrance to any concrete product.

This is only suitable for interior use as even with grip strips there is enough foot space for slips in damp or wet conditions.

Etched

Cutting into the cement particles of the fair face and into the top 1-2mm of the aggregate to produce a course exposed surface.

The removal of the cement particles from the top surface gives the material a rich colour defined by the aggreate.

Traditionally done by acid etching, a harsh toxic process for the oporator and the environment.

Our preferred options are to use controlled retardents like Graphic Concrete Expose or post casting with a light grit blasting.

Patterned

Using custom or collection patterns from Graphic Concrete to expose the aggregate through the fair face in a very accurate controlled visual precast surface.

The contrast in colour is created by the mix design of aggregates, cement and if required, pigments.

The depth of the pattern is 0.5 to 2mm depending on retardent and or cement srength. With the right size and consistency of graphic design the surface can offer very good grip.

Embossed

Embossing is created through form liners that are mould from a 3D printed, CNC’d or existing surface to create a reliably repeatable surface pattern.

The visual effect is created in the surface contrast of the fair face finish. The depth of details can have peak to trough variences of 1 to 5mm, and greater for larger non tread products.
